What is a Hymn?

This is an extract from the book Practical Elemental Magick by Sorita d’Este and David Rankine and is reproduced here with permission. It is included here in explanation for those uncertain of what is meant by a “hymn” which needs to be written as part of the membership process.

  • Hymn – a hymn is a spiritual song or lyrical religious poem, commonly used in               adoration or praise of a deity. Hymns are normally recited to attract the attention of the deity, in the hope that they will add their power to your intent and ensure success. What we call a hymn is also known as a prayer, and is often referred to as invocation in         modern pagan traditions, though by our definition this is not the case as the deity is not being called into something or someone as a visible image. Despite the name, a hymn does not include music, and when music is added to a hymn, it is the hymn tune.         Examples of hymns of this kind are the Orphic Hymns to the Greek Gods.
